Q. What can I expect from Coaching?
A. Thanks for asking! Considering the conversation I just had yesterday with a prospective client, this is perfect timing to explain what coaching can do for you.
In a nutshell, coaching creates a what might be called a Roadmap for Life – which is the TIERNEY Credo … (drum roll, please….):
Figure out What You Want and Learn How to Ask for It
Usually, I find myself meeting one of two kinds of people –
- Those that have no idea what they want but once they figure it out, nothing will stop them…..
- People who know exactly what they want but can’t adopt the necessary changes to get it.
Further, the “want” can get tricky since we are usually brainstormed our while lives about what we should want – the big house, the corner office or more money – but those things, in and of themselves, cannot be responsible for true happiness or freedom, which is at the core of most desires … the ability to surround yourself with positive influences or stimulation is what I usually define as happiness or freedom – which some people find hard to define (i.e. what will make me happy?) In coaching, we will strive to get you to understand – identify, then relate to – the essence or nuance of this positive environment – which should ideally exist in the physical, mental and emotional realm of your life experience.
Learning how to ask for what you want – once you have completely determined the specifics around your desires – becomes easier when you are attached emotionally to this well-formed outcome. When you can see it, feel it, etc. so sometimes a coach will help you with this through visualization, guided meditation and breathing techniques – if you can imagine it, and believe it for yourself, manifestation becomes much easier.
In addition to asking, sometimes we have to start telling the same people over and over what is it we want – this helps us to believe it, grounds our environment to accept the changes and raises the energy to accommodate positive change – think about quitting smoking, starting to exercise, considering an alternative perspective when met with conflict, etc.
Coaches will ask questions or provide assessments in order to help you get in touch with your wants and desires – then help you to take baby steps on a regular on-going basis that will get your further and further toward your goals until they are achieved.
Despite these assessments, some people just remain stuck. Yesterday’s conversation was filled with lots of silence on the other end of the phone, along with many “Yeah, I dunno” statements.
When you are truly ready, willing and able to make things better – improve your professional career, improve key relationships with others or just make everything in your life better, you should definitely consider using a coach to help you make all your dreams come true…!
